Washington’s New Wave win

Washington: “Sunday Best”
Directors: Mairi Cameron and Stephen Lance

Speaking of music videos, congratulations to Washington for taking out Music Video of the Year at the 2010 J Awards. This caps off an amazing year for Megan Washington after her two ARIA wins for Best Female artist and Breakthrough Artist. And of course, her immense musical talents aside, it’s her style that has made her my pick for Girl Crush of the Year.

The video for “Sunday Best” is a film-lover’s delight. A pastiche of Jean-Luc Godard films including Une Femme est Une Femme, A Bout de Souffle and Bande à Part (with a nod to Truffaut’s Jules et Jim), it’s a black-and-white nouvelle vague Parisian fantasy. And while the whole thing hangs together so seamlessly—well, as seamlessly as jump-cutting will allow—Washington’s outfits also show her chameleon-like nature. From ’60s tennis-style minidress to Busby Berkeley–worthy stars & stripes and finishing up as a modern glamazon in a one-shouldered sequinned gown cinched with a wide metal belt—variously accessorised with those hip specs, Vespas, and finger guns—she is truly the pin-up of the year.

As M. Godard himself once said: “All you need for a movie is a gun and a girl.” Just pray that girl is Megan Washington.
