AFI prediction

With only hours to go until the technical AFI Awards are announced, it’s time for Miss Prescott to put in her two cents’ worth. As per the nominations (for Bright Star, Bran Nue Dae, Beneath Hill 60 and Animal Kingdom) I’m guessing that this is one of the few categories in which Animal Kingdom might not triumph.

Miss Prescott’s money (which would be more than two cents if she were a betting woman) is on Janet Patterson for Bright Star. Patterson is director Jane Campion’s go-to costume designer for films including The Piano, Portrait of a Lady and Holy Smoke. She has also dressed Cate Blanchett and Ralph Fiennes in Gillian Armstrong’s Oscar & Lucinda, and was on board for P.J. Hogan’s Peter Pan. She has previously won two AFI Awards (for Oscar and The Piano) and was nominated for 1992’s The Last Days of Chez Nous. She has also been nominated for four Academy Awards, including for Bright Star.

Each of the films nominated obviously have their style merits (historically accurate uniforms for Beneath Hill 60, slacker crim sweats for Animal Kingdom and the dusty vibrancy of Bran Nue Dae), but Bright Star should take it out not only due to the historical costume factor, but also because the lead character of Fanny Brawne (played by Abbie Cornish) is a fashion designer, and so her ensembles require particularly unique panache. Watch this space…
