Santa, baby

Christmas used to be such a simple time. The man in the red suit was awaited with bated breath by little ones, who had left out a slice of cake and a dram of whisky (and dads the world over rejoiced when they stumbled in late from the pub).

Santa has been much celebrated on celluloid. In Miracle on 34th Street, Edmund Gwen (above) cut a fine figure as Kris Kringle in the red suit, in the 1947 feelgood classic, alongside a tiny poppet, Natalie Wood.

But not all Santas are created equal, and some are certainly more naughty than nice. Or just very accident prone. Chevy Chase got festive as Clark Griswold in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, in which family festivities inevitably take a ludicrous turn. Sound familiar?

Aww, he sure looks sweet, but as anyone who saw Gremlins knows, Gizmo and co sometimes take a turn for the worst. Just add water…

But the baddest Santa of all is saved for Billy Bob Thornton, a hard-drinking, chain-smoking, womanising conman who finds redemption thanks to a jolly little upstart in Bad Santa. Well, it’s Christmas after all, there’s hope for even the most Grinch-like amongst us.

Merry Christmas!
