Oscar nominations announced

Alice in Wonderland – Colleen Atwood
I Am Love – Antonella Cannarozzi
The King’s Speech – Jenny Beavan
The Tempest – Sandy Powell
True Grit – Mary Zophres
The Oscar nominations are through, and there are some commonalities with those for the BAFTAs, with Alice in Wonderland, The King’s Speech and True Grit all getting another nod. Ballet thriller Black Swan and Brit flick Made In Dagenham didn’t make the cut this time. However two other films—with radically different aesthetics—stepped up.

Great to see The Tempest in here; Sandy Powell’s modern/historical costumes included zip and stud detailing on Elizabethan ruffs and doublets [very Burberry biker] with occasional forays into the fantastical. A feathered Helen Mirren is a highlight.

Costumes were critical for I Am Love to convey the luxury milieu of which Tilda Swinton’s character Emma (pictured above) has become a part. Antonella Cannarozzi made the perfect choice in co-opting Raf Simons for Jil Sander to create Swinton’s minimalist, colour-coded wardrobe.

My Maltesers are still on Alice, although my love for Jil Sander could make I Am Love an outside favourite.
