Yeojin Bae in Le Marais

Yeojin Bae A/W2011, Le Marais
Director: Catherine Caines

Just as Melbourne-based designer Yeojin Bae launches her first online store (http://shop.yeojinbae.com), she’s offering a video of her latest collection, Le Marais, named after the city’s hippest arrondissement. Filmed during the lookbook shoot at her Chapel Street HQ, it showcases her sexy and streamlined collection, set to music by the fabulous Frenchie Emilie Simon.

“Well, I love Paris,” explains Yeojin of the collection. “My new season is very sophisticated and Parisian, and a little bit Lou Doillon. The video captures the pace and energy of the collection, that’s not going to come across from a flat shot. More and more people are curious about what happens in the background or behind the scenes of a shoot.”

Again presenting a small but perfectly formed collection, Yeojin offers her take on winter, with 1930s-style dresses with subly sexy cut-outs, printed pants-and-top ensembles, sequin-encrusted dresses, tops and trousers, and her take on the tuxedo.

“Every season I update a suit, and I really love the black tuxedo with the cutout in the neckline. This one I’ll be wearing quite a lot, over a shirt or T-shirt. Lots of my girlfriends are wearing it and they’re all different body shapes. I’m very much keeping to silhouettes that are really flattering on women. I’m always working on that  balance of having that sex appeal but remaining sophisticated. That’s something I try to finesse each season.”

But her favourite piece in the collection? “The sequin pants in the gold have been making a very regular appearance in my wardrobe—I love wearing them with a navy silk shirt and cream jumper. You can barely feel them, they mould to your body and feel super glamorous, chic and comfortable.” And isn’t that the key to the French woman’s wardrobe?
