Gucci award nominees announced

The nominations for the Gucci Award for Women in Cinema have been announced. This inaugural award will recognise an outstanding achievement by a woman in filmmaking, with the winner announced at the 68th Venice Film Festival. This heralds another film initiative by the fashion house.

The nominees come from a variety of disciplines including director, actor, producer and screenwriter, as decided by an advisory committee led by Venice International Film Festival Director Marco Mueller.

The 2011 Gucci Award for Women in Cinema nominees are:
Caroline Champetier: director of photography, Of Gods and Men
Jessica Chastain: actor, The Tree of Life
Federica Pontremoli: screenwriter, Habemus Papam
Nansun Shi: producer, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame
Athina Tsangari: director and producer, Attenberg

The winner will be decided by a jury headed by Gucci creative director Frida Giannini—jury members include Robin Wright, Valeria Golino, James Franco and Giulia D’Agnolo Vallan, the film festival’s US programmer—and will be announced at a ceremony and dinner hosted by Giannini on September 2.

This award is just another example of Gucci’s affinity with the film world: for six years, it has worked with Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation, in restoring groundbreaking and influential films. So far, these include Antonioni’s Le Amiche, Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and Visconti’s Il Gattopardo. The most recent example, Nicholas Ray’s We Can’t Go Home Again, will be shown in all its restored glory at the Venice Festival on September 4.

To celebrate the winner, Gucci will donate US$25,000 to the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in the name of the recipient of the 2011 Gucci Award for Women in Cinema.

The 68th Venice Film Festival runs from August 31–September 10.
